Monty Roberts, special advisor to Kennedy Racing.
Monty Roberts, known as The Man Who Listens to Horses, is one of the most recognizable trainers of championship horses on earth. This best-selling author, former Hollywood stunt man, foster dad to 47 children (in addition to three of his own) is the creator of the equine training technique called Join-Up®, which has revolutionized the 6,000 year old tradition of horse training. Roberts has won countless awards and received immense worldwide press coverage, put three books on the New York Times best-seller list, trained Queen Elizabeth II’s Thoroughbred horses in England and been awarded doctorates from the Universities of Zurich and Parma. His mastery across dozens of horse training disciplines is unparalleled in the industry. His life’s goal is to leave the world a better place than he found it, for horses and for people, too.
Starting in 1973 Monty and his wife, Pat started purchasing Thoroughbred yearlings at sales in California, Kentucky and New York. For 18 years they were the leading consigners of Two-Year-Olds In Trainng at the premier breeze up sale at Hollywood Park. During these years, they purchased Alleged, twice Prix de l’Arc Triomphe winner, An Act, Santa Anita Derby winner, as well as numerous other stakes winners in the years 1972 through 1985. Monty has been affiliated with Gestut Fahrhof in Bremen, Germany since the early 1980’s when Mr. Walther Jacobs engaged Monty to travel to Germany to work with the brilliant, Lomitas, who had become impossible to load in the starting stalls. After a few short days, Monty was able to help Lomitas overcome his aversion and the stallion went on to successfully help form a dynasty for Gestut Fahrhof, becoming the sire of Silvano and many other German greats. In 1989 Monty visited and demonstrated his Join-Up training techniques for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. From this point on, at the bequest of the Queen, Monty traveled extensively in the British Isles to share his techniques with her subjects. For the past ten years, Monty has been starting Her Majesty’s yearlings at Sandringham each fall along with those of Gestut Fahrhof’s.
In 2011 Roberts was honored privately by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as an honorary Member of the Royal Victorian Order for his service to the Royal Family and Her Majesty. The Queen also recognized Roberts’ outstanding efforts helping veterans recover from their combat related stress by becoming Patron of the non-profit 501c3 organization, Join-Up International, which Monty founded. Remarkably, Roberts’ The Man Who Listens to Horses does not include any of this story since meeting Queen Elizabeth in 1989 and he is now writing his second autobiography. Still traveling globally most of the year to demonstrate and impart his concepts of working with horses in the absence of violence, Monty continues to create a more positive future for horses, and for people too.
Monty is credited with launching the first of its kind Equus Online University; an interactive online lesson site that is the definitive learning tool for violence-free training.Today, Monty’s goal is to share his message that “Violence is never the answer.”
